On the 26th of August; Malaria awareness held Oworonshoki community in Lagos siege by  Models Against Malaria . MAM is a flagship Anti-malaria advocacy, Awareness & Prevention initiative of the Models Village Foundation.

The event was hosted in collaboration with the reigning Miss Peace Nigeria, Melody Odiete John.

The Federal Ministry of Health, who were also part of the programme, provided insecticide treated mosquito nets which were given out freely to the Oworonshoki community.

The MAM group consists of professional models who act as an advocacy tool for engaging public figures and celebrities around the world to contribute their quota towards humanity by using their publicity prowess to draw stronger attention to malaria infections; delivering life-saving health supplies; and sanitation equipment to families and rural communities across Africa.

MAM carries out sanitation exercise, lectures, and also provides the communities with treated insecticides mosquito nets, mosquito repellants and valuable gifts to families.

While the collaboration of NGOs and government agencies has brought about reasonable decrease in malaria deaths; the need for sustained awareness and advocacy campaigns is paramount as the parasite re-emerges uncontrollably in rural communities, due to poor welfare services and attitude to environment.

At the event, Mr. Micheal Iyoha, who is the founder of Models Village Foundation highlighted the aims and objectives of Models Against Malaria initiative which include:

  •  The use of “Beauty” as a vehicle to drive anti-malaria campaigns across Africa.
  • To promote hygiene ethics in rural communities.
  • To foster frequent public campaigns to eradicate malaria infections among pregnant women and children.
  • To hold community workshops across Nigeria especially in the rural areas.
  • To work in partnership with Federal Ministry of Health and other healthcare Organisations within Nigeria and across Africa in the fight against Malaria.
